Sanford Springvale Fire Stations – Project Update

On November 5, 2024, Sanford and Springvale residents voted to approve the construction of two new fire stations: one in Sanford (Fire & EMS Headquarters) and one in Springvale (District Station). The new stations will replace outdated facilities that no longer meet modern needs or current firefighting safety standards.
City Administration has been working closely with WBRC Inc. and Mitchell Associates Architects to finalize the construction designs for the Sanford Fire & EMS Headquarters. All engineering and mechanical components of the station have been finalized, and work continues on the remaining design elements. Once the Headquarters design is complete and a contractor is chosen, construction will begin on the Headquarters building and design for the Springvale District Station will start. At that time, an updated tentative timeline for the Springvale District Station will be released.
Permit applications have been submitted to both the City of Sanford and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MeDEP). The Headquarters site plan appeared before the Site Plan Review Committee for the first time on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The plan is anticipated to move forward to the Planning Board on May 21, 2025. The permit with MeDEP is currently under review.

The City applied for Congressional Directed Spending (CDS) grant funds in April 2025 and is currently awaiting Congress’s decision regarding which projects this year’s funding will be allocated to. The City continues to explore additional grant opportunities to support the project’s needs.
As the Sanford Springvale community continues to grow, these new stations will ensure faster response times, enhance firefighter safety, and improve service for all residents. They represent a vital investment in the future, supporting a safer and stronger community for years to come.
